Feminist Student Union at Hood College: feminism is not just something discussed in a classroom. It is an opportunity to learn, create, and connect with others.
Alix Parks, president of FSU, has been involved with the organization for three years and has served as president for two. Under Parks’ leadership, FSU focuses on educating students and raising awareness about gender equality and inclusion.
“Our goal is to educate and build community,” Parks said.
The club combines education with crafting events, conversations, and advocacy programs. Each semester, the organization holds recurring activities such as vision board making, Totes a Feminist, and Build a Valentine.
The club also hosts education events like programs with Planned Parenthood Maryland, discussions about current topics, and presentations from campus guest speakers, usually with Dr. Mallory Huard, their advisor.
One event Parks is looking forward to is FSU’s first Safe Halloween event. The event will include a costume contest with prizes such as self-care items and safety keychains, while also teaching students ways to stay safe during Halloween weekend.
FSU currently has five executive members, but the organization is open to all undergraduate students. Anyone on campus can attend its events unless otherwise stated.
Parks said the organization is focused on creating an informative and open environment for students.
“FSU is open to everyone,” Parks said. “We encourage people from all walks of life to join us in conversation.”
