Asian Students Union Holds fall events

For some students, college is a place to be open to new things. For the Asian Student Union at Hood College, it is also a place to feel at home.

Led by President Milio Watkins, Hood ’28, ASU works to create a welcoming community for Asian students while inviting anyone interested in learning about Asian cultures.

The club became an official student union last semester, making this year a brand-new beginning for the organization. ASU’s goal is to help students feel more connected to their cultures while building friendships through camp life, food, crafts, and educational events.

“We want to create a bit of home for everyone,” Watkins said.

ASU hosts many activities on campus, often combining cultural education with food or crafts. One of the traditions is the Dinner Table Series, where students are able to gather over meals and have the opportunity to connect.

This semester, students can participate in karaoke with the Queer Student Union, build and decorate carp kites, foldable fans, and attend information sessions with the Asian Center of Frederick.

Watkins is personally excited for the bonsai tree-making event with the Frederick Student Union. As FSU’s vice president, Watkins said the event brings together two of their favorite interests: art and the outdoors.

While ASU celebrates Asian cultures, everyone is welcome to join. Students can become members by joining the ASU community on Viva Engage, where they can also find updates about upcoming events.

Students can also follow ASU on Instagram at @Hoodcollege.ASU or email ASA@Hood.edu.

For Watkins, ASU is about more than events. It is about creating a space where students can feel seen, heard and connected.
