Evan Freeman, a former assistant coach at Towson University, will be new head coach of the cross country and track and field teams starting June 1.

Freeman brings a wide range of experience from all NCAA levels and a proven record of building strong programs.

As an assistant coach at Towson University since August 2022, he led the team to an ECAC Team Championship in both the 2023 outdoor and 2025 indoor track seasons. The Towson Tigers also recorded 31 top 10 finishes and produced nine Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) Championship scorers.

He began his coaching career in 2017 at Baldwin Wallace University and led team to a national championship. Freeman was an assistant coach at Mississippi College from 2020 to 2022, helping the team reach its first NCAA appearance.

Freeman earned his bachelor’s degree in history from Walsh University in 2017.

“My experience over the past several years has allowed me to coach across all divisions and work with student-athletes from a variety of backgrounds and competitive levels,” Freeman said. “Helping grow programs into conference and national contenders has prepared me for the responsibilities I’m taking on at Hood.”

Freeman said building a strong team culture will be central to his approach.

“The challenges remain consistent — finding individuals who are passionate and dedicated to getting the best out of themselves academically and athletically,” he said. “Team culture is the cornerstone of any great program, and identifying the right people to fit our vision will be a top priority.”

Freeman outlined both short- and long-term goals for the program, starting with increasing roster size and visibility.

“Hood is an incredible institution with so much to offer,” he said. “We want to attract student-athletes who are as excited about this opportunity as our current team and staff.”

In the long term, Freeman said he aims to build a program that competes at the top of the conference and on the national stage while maintaining a strong team culture.

“Development is a four-year process,” Freeman said. “It’s not just about physical training, but also building confidence, composure and the ability to perform under pressure.”
