The Hood women’s lacrosse team will take to the field Saturday, March 6 for the first time in almost a year, when collegiate athletics were canceled due to COVID-19.
The women’s lacrosse team was only able to play seven games in the 2020 season, ending with a record of 3-4. The last full season was in 2019, when the team finished with a record of 9-8.
Five of the 24 players on the roster have yet to have an opportunity to play more than half a season and nine more players haven’t played a single game for the Blazers yet.
Additionally, the current head coach, Laura Fox, was hired in the summer of 2019 and still has not had the opportunity to coach the team for an entire season.
While these details may be cause for concern, Lucy Sokoloff, a sophomore midfielder, provided an introspective look into how the Blazers are operating this season.
“We’ve been playing Seven’s in practice and doing game-like scenarios,” Sokoloff said. “We’ve changed our positions with some girls, including myself, and I think that’s going to really give a lot of people an opportunity to do great.”
Sokoloff went on to mention that Mackenzie Demaio, a fellow sophomore midfielder, is someone to really look out for on this Blazers roster.
“She comes from a huge lacrosse background, she’s finally playing in a midfield role and as a lefty she has a huge advantage over a lot of defenders,” Sokoloff said.
Despite the potentially tough season ahead of them, Sokoloff remains confident, saying that she and her teammates are ready to get back on the field and compete.
The Blazers will host the Arcadia University Knights for their first match, kicking off the beginning to perhaps the most anticipated season many of the players have ever experienced.
