Blazer Radio is inviting Hood College to take its passion from the classroom to the radio this semester.
The student-produced streaming station is available 24 hours a day, playing different music when students’ shows aren’t on air. Students, faculty and staff can propose shows on topics ranging from sports and music to politics and history. Blazer Radio also promotes shows through social media platforms, flyers and promotional spots recorded by hosts.
Students who have a passion or even an interest in creating a show can submit a proposal and choose any time slot that works for them. Once the proposal is approved, they can record a show with a weekly time slot. Students who are interested can find the proposal form outside Professor Timothy Jacobsen’s office on the third floor of the multimedia suite.
The station currently has five shows planned for this semester, but Jacobsen, professor and coordinator of Hood College Broadcast Studios and Blazer Radio, is looking to reach six to eight shows.
For students who want to join, Blazer Radio provides hands-on experience in public speaking, execution of creativity, operation of audio equipment and experience behind a microphone. Students can add this experience to their resumes when pursuing their future careers that may involve podcasting, marketing, broadcasting or other forms of media production.
The time commitment is small. Most students host a one-hour show once a week or every other week, usually spending about 15 minutes preparing before and after the broadcast. The station also gives students opportunities to DJ campus events, assist with social media promotion and formulate show production.
“You do have something to offer. Everybody does,” Jacobsen said.
