Hood College seniors majoring in communication arts presented their multimedia capstone projects ranging from sportswashing, community journalism and the Frederick Flying Cows on Tuesday, May 5.
The annual event, held in the Volpe Athletic Center, showcased 10 graduating seniors in the communication arts program. Their projects focused on topics they were passionate about, as well as the work they’ve done during their four years in the program.
Amrit Brown presented his project on sportswashing and its impact on modern sports culture.
The project combined blog posts, infographics and a podcast to explain how governments, corporations and organizations use sports to shape public perception and advance their interests.
Brown highlighted both historical and recent examples, encouraging audiences to better understand the issue and form their own perspectives.
Sofia Montoya-Deck presented her project on community journalism by highlighting everyday people and stories that are often overlooked in traditional news coverage. Through podcasts, an article and an infographic, she emphasized the importance of giving a voice to underrepresented perspectives and showcasing meaningful, real-life experiences within communities.
Montoya-Deck’s project aimed to help audiences see themselves reflected in the news while demonstrating how different media formats can be used to tell impactful, human-centered stories.
Aaron Heller, Charles Baynum and Joshua Wagner presented their projects related to the Frederick Flying Cows.
Wagner focused on the story of their dance team, the Cowbelles, highlighting their role, history and cultural significance through visual storytelling. Heller’s project focused on the Cow’s basketball team, capturing the full story of a basketball game, highlighting the intensity, strategy and teamwork behind both the physical and mental aspects of the sport. Baynum’s work looked at the Cow’s marketing initiatives.
Jada Turner highlighted her project that showed different sides of Baltimore. Sean Carnell’s project looked at the role of nostalgia in marketing. Aaliyah Pinkney and Logan Elias presented the multimedia public relations projects they had created for local enterprises. Gracyn Van Bemmel presented her work in travel journalism.
The event concluded with an award to the Alumnus of the Year, which was given to Brandon Green, a 2018 graduate of the communication arts program. Green is a multimedia journalist for Spectrum News 13 in Orlando, Florida, covering sports.
