Intramural sports bring energy to the Hood College campus by introducing sports that are exciting while encouraging students to stay active and connected as a community.
Ryland Weaver, head of intramural sports, revived the club in the 2024 fall semester.
“I started working in the Student Life suite my freshman year, and Ms. Bonnie Nipper brought up the fact that there was no one running intramural sports and offered me the opportunity,” Weaver said. “I had a lot of fun doing it last year, and now we have our awesome GA Melvin to co-lead events with me.”
Tournaments are held every Wednesday from 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. The events are currently taking place in the Gambrill Gymnasium.
The program hosts a variety of sports, including badminton, tennis, pickleball, basketball, ping-pong and ultimate frisbee.
All students are welcome, with no prior experience necessary to join. Organizers are encouraging students to try something new. The goal is to be a supportive space where everyone feels comfortable and has fun.
“Our No. 1 priority is creating a relaxed environment where players can compete,” Weaver said. “It’s less about winning and losing, and more about building relationships and having fun.”
Students can sign up by themselves to be placed on a team or be placed on a team upon arrival at the event.
Organizers hope the program grows into a lasting tradition where students can have a fun break and a new and fun way to connect with other students.
Students are encouraged to check out Instagram at @hoodintramurals or continue to read the weekly emails for updates.
