The Hood College Graduate School will be offering two new programs next semester.
According to the director of graduate admissions, Tanith Fowler Corsi, the new programs include sustainability and nutrition science and a new health informatics master’s degree.
“We are always looking at the local and regional market’s work demands,” Fowler Corsi said. “We’re seeing if there’s any niche that Hood College can fill,” Fowler Corsi added.
The health informatics master’s degree “combines studies in health, which is where a lot of jobs are, and computing and IT, which is in every single field,” Fowler Corsi said.
The 4PLUS track in sustainability and nutrition science will prepare students for careers as nutritionists, dieticians and other careers related to health and wellness. The 4PLUS program allows students to get both their bachelor’s and master’s degrees in around five years.
Both new programs provide “a lot of good options for in-demand careers,” Fowler Corsi said.
Fowler Corsi said that some departments are in the process of hiring new faculty, but it will be up to those departments to decide who will be teaching the graduate classes.
Students in the program can begin taking graduate courses in their junior year. According to Hood’s website, some incentives for taking those classes include waived application fees and priority advising.
To help Hood alums further their education, the graduate school offers an Alumni of the Last Three Years (ALTY) scholarship. The incentives for the ALTY scholarship are similar to the 4Plus program. According to the Hood website, the scholarship would give students expedited admission, a waived application fee, undergraduate credits applied to master’s degrees and the last three graduate credits at no cost.
Fowler Corsi encouraged students to attend events hosted by the graduate school to ask any questions they may have. The graduate school is located on the third floor of the Apple building.
