Their books consist of digital art/digital representations of physical art, poetry and prose.

As the Hood College community has settled into the fall semester, Vice Editor Tamsin Moore and Social Media Manager Malaysia Jackson have come up with a new approach to get people involved with Wisteria. The Wisteria Literary Magazine will be holding more community-focused events at Hood and in downtown Frederick.

The board plans various open mic poetry Sky Stage events along with artistic events like crafts and art board making, or literary game nights with games like Scrabble, Bananagrams and Pictionary.

Sapna said the board is developing a new way Wisteria can take submissions. Two drives, fall and spring, will be held this year to give students time during collection.

Sapna said these changes are a result of the low engagement Wisteria had from Hood College last year.

“Tamsin, I and Malaysia think we kind of grappled with the fact that we were going to have to do something different and kind of get in with the community and students,” Sapna said. “That’s one of the biggest changes that we’ve had to make in our thinking is: how do we get people interested in Wisteria the way that we are? And the way that we know some people could be, we just don’t have it yet.”

Sapna said this desire to get people to join comes from a love for art. The voting/critique process gives a less punishing way to help people refine their work.

However, Sapna found that Wisteria was missing serious writing. Committee meetings didn’t provide real-world preparation for artists within the college.

Having led the board to change the way they interacted with the community in hopes of encouraging the creation of more art, Wisteria hopes to bring in more interested artists with diverse points of view to express.

If you want to keep up with Wisteria, join their biweekly meeting in Rosenstock Hall, room 317, or follow @Wisteria_Magazine on Instagram.

##

Junior Meg Wilcox and chief Isabella Sapna of Wisteria at sky stage.
