At the same time, expectations for job-ready skills continue to grow.

The National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) reports employers project a 1.6% increase in hiring for the Class of 2026, signaling little change from last year.

Nearly 60% of employers plan to hire the same number of graduates, while about one quarter expect to increase hiring, and 14% plan to reduce their number of entry-level hires.

As a result, many employers rate the job market for 2026 graduates as only “fair.” About 45% use that description, marking the first time since 2021 that employers express such caution following years of stronger post-pandemic hiring.

Economic uncertainty continues to shape recruiting decisions.

Employers who plan to hire fewer graduates cite budget restrictions, reduced business needs, and concerns about the broader economy.

Others say commitments to company growth and succession planning drive modest hiring increases, even as organizations remain wary of expanding payrolls too quickly.

Hiring trends vary by industry. Employers report the strongest demand for 2026 graduates in professional services, engineering services, construction, finance, insurance, real estate and management consulting.

Manufacturing-related industries, including food and beverage production and chemical and pharmaceutical manufacturers, expect the largest declines in entry-level hiring.

Recruiting timelines are also shifting. While fall remains the primary recruiting season, employers continue to push more hiring into the spring.

About 37% of full-time hiring is expected to take place later in the academic year, a change NACE attributes to employers delaying decisions amid economic uncertainty.

At the same time, employers increasingly shift how they evaluate candidates. Nearly 70% now use skills-based hiring practices, focusing on what applicants can do rather than relying on GPAs or academic credentials alone.

Additional research summarized by the Learn & Work Ecosystem Library, an online research hub that compiles national studies on education-to-workforce trends, finds that many students remain unaware of this shift.

Bree Harwood, assistant director of career development and experiential learning at Hood College, emphasized the importance of implementing high-impact practices that prepare students for careers after graduation.

“One of the ways is through high-impact practices, and those can be implemented in a few different ways,” Harwood said.

Harwood pointed to internships as one of the most effective tools for career development.

“Internships give students hands-on experience that is wonderfully transferable to life after Hood and into the workforce,” she said.

She encouraged students to reflect on the skills they develop outside the classroom.

“I encourage students to think about their time as interns and the skills they learned through that experience, and how they can implement those skills in their first job,” Harwood said.

Fewer than 40% of graduating seniors say they are familiar with the term “skills-based hiring,” despite employers emphasizing demonstrated skills during resume reviews and interviews.

Reliance on GPA screening continues to decline, with fewer employers using it as a primary filter than in previous years.

Pay remains relatively steady, even as hiring growth slows. About 40% of employers plan to raise starting salaries for bachelor’s degree graduates, while more than a quarter expect increases for master’s degree holders.

Roughly half of employers also plan to offer signing bonuses to new hires.

For seniors preparing to enter the workforce, the outlook underscores the importance of internships, practical experience and the ability to clearly communicate skills to employers.

While the job market does not show rapid expansion, stable hiring and steady wages suggest graduates who adapt to changing expectations remain competitive as they enter the workforce.

Harwood reflected on her own transition into the workforce after graduation.

“When I was first starting out after Hood, I felt prepared, but I was also nervous entering the workforce for the first time,” she said. “There were a lot of things I had to learn with time, patience, and experience. Everything doesn’t come instantly.”

##

By Michaiah Varnes// College seniors graduating in 2026 will face a job market that is stable but marked by employer caution, with hiring neither increasing nor decreasing significantly.
