Jordan Jones, a Hood College sophomore, spoke at the Braver Angels debate in Whitaker Campus Center on Sept. 10.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\nThe College Debates and Discourse (CD&D) Alliance event was directed by Carin Robinson, associate professor of political science, and Bryan Paul, CD&D curricular fellow at the American Council of Trustees and Alumni.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Twenty-seven students and faculty members attended the debates, most of whom\u00a0were students from Robinson’s class.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe have sadly seen students across the country shout down speakers they disagree with,\u201d Paul said. “By engaging in Braver Angels collegiate debates, Dr. Robinson’s students demonstrated that there is a better way to disagree with each other.”\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The two debate questions discussed were: Should non-discrimination laws take precedence over religious liberty? Should we end the presidential term limits? <\/p>\n\n\n\n
At the end of each debate, there was a debriefing session on what was discussed, opening the floor for faculty and students to freely share their thoughts. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI think the debate was very productive,” Jordan Jones, a Hood College sophomore, said. “I was proud to hear people who have educated opinions. We should facilitate things like this more. I\u2019m beyond grateful for the opportunity.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
