On the last week of Novem\u00adber, Hood received a $2.135 million grant from the Hodson Trust.<\/p>\n
President Volpe received this gift at the annual board of director\u2019s meeting in Baltimore.<\/p>\n
Volpe emailed the student body the morning of Wednesday, Decem\u00adber 5 to say he was \u201cpleased to an\u00adnounce\u201d the grant and explain the logistics of the gift.<\/p>\n
A large portion of the grant will go toward student scholarships.<\/p>\n
One example of these schol\u00adarships is the Hodson Scholarship Fund which provides financial aid to students.<\/p>\n
Another scholarship is the Hod\u00adson Trust Star Scholarship program. This program was established five years ago for veterans who have served in the military in Iraq and Af\u00adghanistan from Maryland.<\/p>\n
The Hodson Trust Star Schol\u00adarship pays for 100 percent of these veteran\u2019s financial costs not met by other Hood scholarships or financial assistance.<\/p>\n
Another large portion of the Hodson gift money will go towards The Hodson Summer Research In\u00adstitute that provides financial assis\u00adtance for students and faculty who wish to stay on campus this summer to perform research.<\/p>\n
The Hodson Summer Research Institute was established three years ago to both provide financial assis\u00adtance for summer research and cre\u00adate a fund that will provide for future research initiatives.<\/p>\n
Another part of the Hodson grant will go to providing the entire undergraduate student body and fac\u00adulty with an iPad. Next year, every student on campus will have an iPad to use for course work.<\/p>\n
Some members of the senior class are confused as to whether they will receive iPads before commence\u00adment ceremony in May.<\/p>\n
\u201cI think that [iPads] should be given as graduation gifts so when the seniors go into the workforce\/further their education they have these tools available to them,\u201d senior Elaheh Eghbal said.<\/p>\n
A part of the gift will go towards campus renovations. Specifically, additional classrooms and offices will be built in Tatem Hall and Hod\u00adson Science and Technology Center.<\/p>\n
The remainder of the Hodson Trust grant will go towards the Hod\u00adson Endowed Chair in Nursing.<\/p>\n
The Hodson Trust was estab\u00adlished by Col. Clarence Hodson in 1920.<\/p>\n
Hood has received more than $74 million from The Hodson Trust since 1936.<\/p>\n
Many buildings and facilities on campus were built due to the Hodson Trust, such as Hodson Auditorium in Rosenstock Hall.<\/p>\n
The Hood College community as a whole feels excited about these upcoming changes and renovations that will occur on campus.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
