{"id":5769,"date":"2023-02-13T11:14:03","date_gmt":"2023-02-13T16:14:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/hoodcomstudies.com\/theblueandgrey\/?p=5769"},"modified":"2023-02-13T16:34:38","modified_gmt":"2023-02-13T21:34:38","slug":"hood-college-celebrates-black-history-month","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/theblueandgrey.com\/index.php\/2023\/02\/13\/hood-college-celebrates-black-history-month\/","title":{"rendered":"Hood College celebrates Black History Month"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>By Adila Sebastian &amp; Genesis Moon\/\/<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Black History Month kick-off celebration was held on Feb. 1 and was sponsored by the Division of Community and Inclusivity and the Office of Student Life with support from members of the Black Student Union.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The celebration provided food catered by Jerk N\u2019 Jive, a local black-owned business, with live performance by the local music group \u201cMelodies of Worship,\u201d led by Hood College employee Isaac Barnes. The band played many mainstream artists\u2019 songs that were soul and rhythm and blues genres.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Tammi Simpson, vice president for community &amp; inclusivity, \u201cThe planning committee for Martin Luther King, Jr. Day and Black History Month determined that the theme for January and February would center around supporting and amplifying local African Americans through food, music and an exploration of local Civil Rights activism.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The event had a good turnout, according to Tammi Simpson.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On Feb. 2, the Black Student Union hosted \u201cSip and Spades,\u201d an event where students were taught how to play&nbsp;Spades, a popular card game in Black households. They also sipped on Purple Rain and Blacker the Berry mocktails.
