Hood held an animal blessing for students\u2019 and community members\u2019 pets on Wednesday, Oct. 12.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The event celebrated the feast day of St. Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of animals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a recognition how important our animal family members,\u201d said the Rev. Beth O\u2019Malley, dean of the chapel, who gently petted the animals and blessed them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This type of ceremony isn\u2019t just celebrated <\/a>in faith <\/a>communities, but also <\/a>in veterinary offices and retirement homes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Increasingly students are bringing <\/a>their emotional support pets onto campus due to new guidelines. These pets are meant to help calm students and reduce stress, anxiety and <\/a>depression.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe have more animals on campus <\/a>who are important parts of our <\/a>community,\u201d O\u2019Malley said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hood has held the animal blessing ceremony for the past three years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt started when we created the protocols for students to bring animals to campus,\u201d O\u2019Malley said. It normally happens on Oct. 4 every year, but due to covid as well as updating protocols, there have been changes.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

O\u2019Malley, who has worked at Hood for 15 years, supports students and schedules events that benefit their mental health and spiritual growth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She holds meditation groups regularly to help students with stress and anxiety. She also organizes relief trips within the United States and abroad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI do\u00a0a\u00a0lot of spiritual support,\u201d O\u2019Malley said. \u201cStudents don\u2019t need to be religious to come to me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
