{"id":4806,"date":"2022-02-04T22:58:50","date_gmt":"2022-02-05T03:58:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/hoodcomstudies.com\/theblueandgrey\/?p=4806"},"modified":"2022-02-09T09:19:17","modified_gmt":"2022-02-09T14:19:17","slug":"black-student-union-holds-first-black-history-month-event","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/theblueandgrey.com\/index.php\/2022\/02\/04\/black-student-union-holds-first-black-history-month-event\/","title":{"rendered":"Black Student Union holds Black History Month event"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>By Allie Dickson<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Black Student Union (BSU) kicked off Black History Month with its first event, Blue\u2019z and Food, on Feb. 1.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A large crowd attended the event, which ran from 7:30 p.m. to 11 p.m. in the Whitaker Commons. Additional seating had to be brought in to accommodate the crowd as everyone enjoyed the music, food and time with friends. \u201cI felt like I was going to a cookout on campus,\u201d first-year student Kay Francis said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The food was set-up buffet style and the line wrapped around the room. President of BSU Domota Byrd said, \u201cI hope people respond good, probably mad we ran out of food.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The music was initially picked by club members, but YouTube was pulled up on the projector and anyone could pick the next song. \u201cWhatever they want to listen to, we play,\u201d Byrd said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some of the music played was from the early 2000\u2019s and 2010\u2019s, including songs by artists like Rihanna and Beyonce.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI hope they want to see the event again and again,\u201d Byrd said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Byrd explained that the idea behind the event was to incorporate the idea of cook-outs as bonding events, an idea that traces back to the 90\u2019s in the Black community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a good way to celebrate Black history and Black students and other students can come together to celebrate our cause,\u201d said Blessing Johnson, a sophomore member of BSU.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Other students agreed that the event was fun and that they hope to see it yearly. \u201cMonthly if possible,\u201d Francis jokingly said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cCome out to the BSU events,\u201d Byrd said. \u201cIt\u2019s not just for the African American community, it\u2019s for everybody.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Other BSU events this month include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sip and Paint, Feb. 4<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Talent show, Feb. 17<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Basketball tournament, Feb. 20<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>DC field trip, Feb. 26<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Check out BSU\u2019s Instagram @hoodcollegebsu for more events and dates.
