Daniel Sierra-Sosa joined Hood College in the spring semester of 2021 as the newest assistant professor of computer science.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Sierra-Sosa joined the Hood team after teaching at the University of Louisville for four years. His research and teaching specialize in quantum physics and engineering. At Louisville, Sierra-Sosa created the introduction course for quantum computing. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Quantum computing combines physics and computer science to perform computation and solve complex problems in the technological engineering field. Sierra-Sosa grew up in Colombia and earned his undergraduate degree in physics engineering at EAFIT University (Escuela de administraci\u00f3n, Finanzas e Instituto Technol\u00f3gico). He then moved to Argentina and earned his PhD in physics at the National University of La Plata.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Sierra-Sosa wanted to come to Hood because he said he felt extremely welcomed by everyone and because the computer science team was already well-integrated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI love the growing that the college is doing,\u201d Sierra-Sosa said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
At Hood, Sierra-Sosa will be teaching a variety of computer science courses, but mainly high-level and graduate classes. These classes include Machine Learning for Bioinformatics, Perception in Artificial Intelligence and more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Before teaching, Sierra-Sosa worked in healthcare research. He also created artificial intelligence models for one of the biggest banks in Colombia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Sierra-Sosa said that his job transition is a little tougher than normal because of the on-going COVID-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cIt is certainly more difficult to find a job in this era,\u201d Sierra-Sosa said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
For Sierra-Sosa, this semester is a new chapter in his teaching career, but he said he is excited to be working at Hood and that so far, the semester is going well.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
