This\u00a0academic year\u00a0marks Hood College’s 125th<\/span>\u00a0year\u00a0of being a college. Hood is celebrating\u00a0this\u00a0milestone with\u00a0events, projects and\u00a0opportunities. The celebration kicks off with Hood\u00a0College President Andrea E. Chapdelaine’s student\u00a0challenge for this year:\u00a0commit to 125 minutes per day for studying, 125 minutes per week for exercising, and 125 hours throughout\u00a0the semester\u00a0for volunteering. Students are incredibly supportive\u00a0of the idea and look forward to being a part of the school during such a historically important time.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

With the 125th<\/span>\u00a0anniversary, the community looks back on the history of Hood. The liberal arts school once served as\u00a0a\u00a0female-only school to provide nearby education for women in accordance with the changing\u00a0of the nearby coeducational Mercersburg College to\u00a0the male-only Mercersburg Academy.\u00a0Now\u00a0Hood serves to help any and all dedicated learners.\u00a0This great change impacted many other major decisions made by the\u00a0institution, including the location and the\u00a0name Hood College.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Established in 1893, the college was named the Women’s College of Frederick. The name was\u00a0later changed to Hood in honor of Margaret Scholl Hood, perhaps the most generous benefactor of the time, who granted the college the land to move to where it is located today. In celebration of Hood’s history, the community of Frederick celebrated the first 125th<\/span>\u00a0event at Hood’s original location in Winchester Hall on September 12.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Many showed up to Winchester Hall to celebrate the event where many important figures\u00a0applauded the college’s\u00a0accomplishments, including speakers President\u00a0Chapdelaine and County Executive Jan H. Gardner, who is also\u00a0a Hood\u00a0alumna.\u00a0During the event, a plaque was\u00a0unveiled by students Mary\u00a0Amusa\u00a0and Caitlyn Jean-Ward\u00a0memorializing Winchester Hall in the\u00a0engraved words:\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It was also announced by President Chapdelaine that Hood would be launching the Martha Church Center for Civic Engagement, given the name\u00a0in honor of Martha Church, who provided\u00a0funding for\u00a0the center as a gift. The purpose of the center is to connect students\u00a0with government and business\u00a0opportunities, as well as to “better meet the educational and workforce needs of our community, expand internship and research\u00a0opportunities\u00a0for our students, and increase our civic and service participation,” as stated by President Chapdelaine.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Some commentary was provided by\u00a0speakers County Executive Gardner and President Chapdelaine. Many commented on the history of the building, including an\u00a0alumna\u00a0reminiscing\u00a0that the\u00a0“parking lot that was an athletic complex, and the women that etched their engagements in the windows.”\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

When\u00a0asked what she sees happening\u00a0at\u00a0Hood College in the next few years, Gardner\u00a0stated:\u00a0“I think we’ll continue to see a lot of community partnerships and collaborations. I think we’ll have partnerships unlike we’ve ever experienced in the past, because we know jobs will change faster and faster, even globally.”\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

“I think Hood College will be around for another 150 years, and it will change a lot.” Chapdelaine said.\u00a0“I don’t think we planned on being a co-ed school, but here we are, and it’s a wonderful thing. Hood College will always be changing and bettering.”\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

While the first event has passed, the college and community plan on celebrating many more to come. New students are welcomed cordially and congratulated on being so lucky as to attend on such an important year. The first semester is off to a great start, and all of Frederick looks forward to the college’s events ahead for the year.
