In honor of October being Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the men\u2019s lacrosse team held their annual \u201cStick It to Cancer\u201d lacrosse tournament.<\/p>\n
On Sunday, Oct. 16, the men\u2019s lacrosse team held their annual home tournament at the Thomas Athletic Field against Virginia Tech,DelawareTechCommunity College, andNorthernVirginiaCommunity College.<\/p>\n
A total of three games, consisting of two 25-minute halves were played among all four teams.<\/p>\n
Blue and grey were the colors of choice for most fans, but pink was worn by everyone.<\/p>\n
To help support breast cancer, the class of 2012 sold pink \u201cStick It to Cancer\u201d shirts, water bottles, and lanyards.<\/p>\n
Over 600 hundred fans came out on Sunday to support the teams, and most importantly, breast cancer awareness.<\/p>\n
Other than an important fall season for the lacrosse team, this tournament is mainly for the cause. In previous years, players have supported breast cancer awareness with pink shoelaces on the field. This year, players supported breast cancer awareness by playing with pink balls and wearing pink jerseys.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe lacrosse team played an awesome first couple of games and I\u2019m super proud of them,\u201d said freshman Heather Silvera, a spectator at the game.<\/p>\n
Tons of fans came out to support the men\u2019s lacrosse team, and get a feel of what to expect for the upcoming season in the spring.<\/p>\n
\u201cEveryone on the Hood College men\u2019s lacrosse team got to play on Sunday; and it was a good learning experience,\u201d said head coach Jeremy Mattoon.<\/p>\n
This year, the men\u2019s lacrosse team consists of 17 incoming freshmen. The incoming class includes six midfielders, four goalkeepers, four attack men, and three defenders.<\/p>\n
Coach Mattoon expects for his freshmen to \u201cwork hard, because they have lots of responsibilities on their shoulders,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
The assistant coaches and the players themselves see their teammates succeeding. \u201cThey look pretty good, although they still have some work to do,\u201d said Kristopher Miner, a graduate assistant.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt looks like another good year. Defensively, we are strong, Captain Doug Brisbane (\u201813), and Mark Fluta (\u201814) will have a good year stepping up and leading the defense,\u201d said junior goalie John Martin.<\/p>\n
There are 42 players on the team, consisting of four captains.\u00a0 The men\u2019s lacrosse team is set for the spring.<\/p>\n
The men\u2019s lacrosse season is scheduled to start Jan. 22, 2012 and will continue through end of April.<\/p>\n
