Friends and former colleagues attended a memorial service on Nov. 7 for Liz Chang, who was instrumental in creating the computer science program at Hood.
Chang, who taught for 46 years at the college, died on March 15 at age 83.
During the service at Beneficial-Hodson Library on Nov. 7, guests were invited to speak about the impact Chang had on their lives.
“Liz wasn’t just an academic, but a beloved member of the community who went out of her way to help others,” President Debbie Ricker said.
“She was very kind and always smiled,” Jiang Li, assistant professor of computer science, said. “It’s a really big loss to us.”
Chang began teaching at Hood College in 1972 as part of the Department of Mathematics, where she taught at all levels of the curriculum.
Chang helped establish Hood College’s computer science program, convincing the college to purchase its first computer. She later became chair of the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science, and then chair of the Department of Computer Science and Information Technology.
She retired in 2018.
