Aid continues despite shutdown

Four weeks into the federal government shutdown, student financial aid at Hood continues without interruption.

The Financial Aid Office is also working to support students during this time when grant and loan programs are being scrutinized by the federal government.

“The college continues to invest in scholarships and grants that promote access and recognize academic achievement,” said De Rodrick Jonkins, director of financial aid.

“We take pride in offering one-on-one guidance, maintaining an open-door policy, and extending office hours during peak times,” Jonkins said. “Our goal is to ensure every student understands their options and can make informed decisions about paying for college.”

The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) plays a critical role in covering tuition, housing, books, and other essentials. In early 2025, a federal directive temporarily paused certain financial assistance programs, leading to confusion on campuses nationwide.

However, the Department of Education clarified that direct aid to individuals — such as Pell Grants and federal student loans — remains unaffected.

Students are encouraged to complete their FAFSA applications before the March 1 priority deadline to maximize eligibility for federal, state, and institutional aid. While current students using federal aid will not be affected by the pause, those applying for the upcoming academic year may face changes.

The financial aid office offers personalized support to help students navigate changing policies and develop financial plans. Hood hosts virtual financial aid workshops each summer to help incoming students prepare financially.

For questions about institutional grants or research funding, students are encouraged to contact the Office of the Provost or the Office of Grants and Sponsored Programs.

“Above all, we want every student to feel supported and confident that financial aid is here to help them complete their degree,” Jonkins said. “Feel free to stop in during office hours — we’re here to help.”
