Hood College’s undergraduate commencement ceremony will be held on May 17 at 10 a.m. inside Woodsboro Bank Arena and will be directly followed by the graudate school ceremony at 3 p.m.
This year’s commencement speakers will be Cheryl Dyson, superintendent of Frederick County Public Schools, and Tamelyn Tucker-Worgs, chair of the political science and global studies department.
“Education has the power to transform lives and communities,” Dyson said. “I am proud to stand alongside the graduates who will go on to continue shaping the future.”
Tucker-Worgs also stated her excitement for being selected: “It has been my greatest joy to teach and learn from incomparable students at Hood College for the past two decades. Being asked by the Class of 2025 to be the Commencement speaker is the greatest honor of my career here at Hood,” Tucker-Worgs said.
Due to the limited capacity of the building, each undergraduate student will receive only six tickets for the ceremony, while graduate students may recieve an additional two.
Some seniors expressed disappointment in the location change for the ceremony. In past years, Hood College commencement ceremonies have been held outside.
Senior Hannah Scheibach said she is feeling a mix of disappointment and excitement for the upcoming ceremony.
“I think I was a little bit disappointed because with it being outside, obviously there is no limit to how many people can come. I’m the first of my siblings and my grandparents’ grandkids to graduate. So, I’m excited to have all of my family to come,” Schiebach said.
Schiebach pointed out that Hood has a beatiful campus and the school should be taking advantage of it for graduation. “Who wants to graduate in the stuffy old gym?” she said.
Guests who need ASL interpretation will have reserved seating on the floor while other general seating is available on the bleachers.
If a wheelchair or walker is needed for guests, they will be seated on an aisle or near the stage.
