Hood College’s men’s and women’s tennis teams are preparing for their final season, with coach Phillip Harvin stepping in to lead the program.
In late fall, Hood Athletic Director Susan Kolb announced the college would no longer be sponsoring tennis after this season.
Harvin, who works in the college’s information technology department and has a passion for tennis, said he is excited to guide the team through this historic last season.
With multiple returning players and a focus on both competition and enjoyment, the team aims to make the most of its final matches while offering walk-on opportunities for interested students.
“I just want to make sure the kids have fun and walk away with the tools to succeed in tennis and life,” Harvin said, “and of course, make some memories along the way.”
Leading the men’s team is junior Tyler James. James’ personal goals for the season are to maintain a winning record and strengthen his friendships with other players on the team. “I mostly just hope for a fun season and to make some memories with the team,” James said.
On the women’s team, Anna Frye stands out as a top competitor, bringing experience and determination to the court.
Beyond competition, the team remains committed to personal growth and fostering a positive atmosphere for all players.
As the program prepares for its conclusion, there are still opportunities for students to participate in this final season. Open slots remain on both the men’s and women’s teams, and interested students are encouraged to explore walk-on opportunities.
