Hollywood studios often release movies during the holiday season and this year is no exception.
From the week before Thanksgiving Day to New Year’s Day there will be plenty of holiday-themed content and new blockbusters coming to theaters.
Kicking off the season on Nov. 15 is a new Christmas movie called “Red One.” This stars J.K. Simmons as Santa Claus, who gets kidnapped, and the Head of North Pole Security, Dwayne Johnson, who has to team up with an infamous bounty hunter played by Chris Evans to save Christmas.
The next weekend of Nov. 22, there will be two competing titles in an opening weekend “Gladiator II” and “Wicked.” “Gladiator II” picks up about 25 years after the first one left off, with Lucius (Paul Mescal) entering the Colosseum, fighting to return Rome to its former glory. It will also star Pedro Pascal, Connie Neilsen and Denzel Washington.
“Wicked” follows the story of the hit Broadway musical of the same name. This will be the first part of a two-part movie, following the story of the first act of the Broadway show. “Wicked” has a star-studded cast, with Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba, Ariana Grande as Glinda, Jonathon Bailey as Fiyero and so many other big names.
If you go to the movie theater the weekend of Nov. 22, be prepared for gaggles of theater enthusiasts ready to see the movie they’ve waited years for.
“Moana 2” will be in theaters on Nov. 27, chronicling Moana and Maui’s voyage to save her island once again. Auli’i Cravalho and Dwayne Johnson will reprise their roles as the film’s protagonists, with much of the original cast returning as well.
Dec. 13, we’ll see Aaron Taylor Johnson return to Marvel movies, not as Quicksilver, but as “Kraven the Hunter,” becoming one of the best and most feared hunters in the world. It will also star Russell Crowe and Ariana Debose.
The following week, Dec. 20, theaters will be flooded with kids, as “Sonic the Hedgehog 3” and “Mufasa: The Lion King” hit theaters on the same day. Ben Schwartz, Colleen O’Shaughnessey, Idris Elba and Jim Carrey will all return to reprise their roles in the “Sonic” trilogy, with Keanu Reeves joining to play the antagonist, “Shadow.”
“Mufasa,” a prequel to the live action “Lion King” from 2019, tells the story of how Scar and Mufasa became brothers, and eventually, enemies. It will have new music, written by Lin Manuel Miranda.
Finally, the last big movie of 2024 comes out on Christmas day: “Nosferatu.” This is a remake of the 1922 movie by the same name, based on Bram Stoker’ “Dracula.” This is another movie chock full of A-listers, including Willem Dafoe, Emma Corrin, Billy Skarsgard, Lilly Rose-Depp, Nicholas Hoult and Aaron Taylor Johnson.
Most movie theaters have a discount day for tickets or snacks. So, if any of these movies pique your interest, research your local theater and see a movie for Thanksgiving or winter break.
