Worried about midterms? Looking for a low-pressure environment to work with like-minded people? Love free pizza? Stop by the tutoring center from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. on March 5.
The library will be collaborating with the Student Success Center for the bi-semester research party, an event held for each midterm and finals season.
The tradition of the research party began in 2022 when librarians in the Beneficial Hodson Library were looking for a new way to support students in their research.
“We did a variety of different workshops,” Jessica Hammack, the library’s head of research and instruction, said. When hosting these events, Hammack and the rest of the team found that the events felt too much like going to class — and as a result—attendance was lacking.
“So we wanted to create something more approachable for students,” Hammack said.
The library staff approached the Student Success Center to create a solution. “I think it’s great for us to work with the Student Success Center,” Hammack said. “We’re all working with students, we’re all helping students be successful with their projects.”
The library staff, in conjunction with the Student Success Center, designed the research party. Hammack described it as a low-key and chill environment, where students are free to come and go as they please.
“All of the librarians are there to help with research, to help with citations,” Hammack said. “It’s very choose your own adventure.”
The library will also be hosting a variety of events later in the semester, including a workshop on conference poster design from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. on April 2, and a book sale kickoff bash from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. on April 23. There will also be a finals research party from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. on April 24.
Outside of these events, tutors and librarians are always available to assist students with their research and work.
