Freshman Mya Torres chose to study at Hood, but the TikTok influencer says she’s learned valuable lessons from social media.
Like many others, Torres started creating content out of boredom in her hometown of Culpepper, Virginia, during the quarantine lockdown in March 2020. In 2021, her popularity grew and she now has 2.3 million followers.
Torres became known for her point-of-view type of content, with one of her most-viewed videos having 2.7 million likes and 17.5 million views. The video, filmed and posted in 2020, shows her acting out going to work for her dad, who is the leader of a gang, and everyone thinks she is an enemy.
She transitioned from creating POV content to videos based on her everyday life, including package unboxings and “get ready with me” videos
Since the exposure, Torres has had two managers and several brand deals. She’s had partnerships with clothing brands, musical artists, apps and many other products.
Torres is a goalkeeper for Hood’s women’s soccer team.
TikTok can be a harsh place, and Torres has been through the hurtful comments. She says being an influencer has definitely given her a boost of confidence, but along with the confidence, she had to put her guard up because of harsh comments.
“I learned not to let the hate comments get to me,” Torres said.
Torres was able to take this lesson from TikTok and put it to use in her everyday life. She said she is able to walk with her head held high, not caring what people think about her.
In the past year, Torres has taken a break from social media, but she is hoping to get back into making content shortly. She wants to be able to reach out to influencers and impact as many people as possible.
