Three Hood Blazers were named Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth “Players of the Week” following their performances last week in their respective sports.
Mary Emma Guldi took home the women’s golf honor, as Anna Frye and Tyler James represented Hood for both men’s and women’s tennis.
Guldi was given the player of the week honor after her impressive performance in the Shenandoah Fall Invitational at Cacapon State Park Golf Club. The junior shot a 165 in the 36-hole two-day tournament with a 77 in the first round and an 88 the following day during the second round. “I put a lot of work into golf, and started to improve with both my technique and my mental game,” Guldi said.
Finishing the first round with a 77 broke her previous school record of 80. Guldi said she was calm during the round and gave a lot of credit to her coaches, Thomas Chatfield and Kendall Mcbean. Although golf takes a lot of skill, Guldi went on to say she was getting many lucky breaks throughout the round to help her shoot a 77.
Frye won her debut tennis match against Marymount University’s Fabienne Fritz in women’s first singles, winning both sets 6-1, 6-1. The first-year student stated, “I have been playing tennis for about 12 years on and off.”
She managed to give the Blazers their only point of the match as a team. She said she never expected to win the award so early in her collegiate career. Tennis matches are played with doubles going first where Frye and her partner lost to the doubles team on Marymount. After the match, Frye told her coach, “I know I can beat her” referring to the No. 1 girl on Marymount. Frye said what helped her win the match was hitting to her opponent’s backhand and playing the match extremely well.
James won a thrilling three-set match in his season debut for the Blazers. The sophomore fell behind in the first set to Marymount’s Ian Martin 6-1. James then turned the tables in the second set, defeating Martin 6-0 and rallied in the third and final set 7-3 to take home the first singles win. James got the only point for Hood in an 8-1 losing effort against Marymount University.
