Study Abroad aims for Paris, Barcelona, Quebec

The study abroad program will offer two new scholarships, three experiential learning trips, and a series of events that are open to students over the coming school year.

Hood College now offers the Beth Darroch Coggins ’81 Memorial Scholarship, and the Mary Hansbrough Sneckenberger ’64 International Travel Award. The Department Chair of Global Languages and Cultures, Scott Pincikowski, said that these scholarships can make what seemed financially unreasonable, possible.

The Beth Darroch Coggins ’81 Memorial Scholarship is for exemplary students studying at least one semester abroad. The $2,500 scholarship will offset travel costs to and from the study-abroad location.

The Mary Hansbrough Sneckenberger ’64 International Travel Award is for $1,350 and can be applied for study in a Spanish-speaking country. The scholarship can be used for lodging, food, airfare, and other expenses connected to the study abroad program.

Additionally, a series of study abroad events, presentations, and workshops will take place on campus this fall. “The college is investing in this because the college thinks this is an experience our students should have,” Pincikowski said.

Pincikowski, who said that these trips can foster confidence and independence, encourages all students to attend these events, or visit him during his office hours on Tuesday and Thursday between 1 p.m. and 2 p.m.

The events are as follows: Study Abroad Information Session, Sept. 6 in the Career Center from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m.; Study Abroad Fair, Sept. 20 in Coblentz Dining from 12:30 p.m. to 2 p.m.; Study Abroad Information Session, Oct. 15 in the career center from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m.; Davis Peace Prize Presentation, Oct. 16, from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m.; Davis Peace Project Grant Workshop, Oct. 18 from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. in the Career Center and Pre-departure Orientation Session, Nov. 25 from 1 a.m. to 11 a.m. in the Career Center.

Lastly, Hood College professors will be taking students on three trips this school year. Professor Lisa Marcus will take students to Quebec over winter break, Marcus and professor Liz Atwood will be taking students to Paris over spring break and professor Robert Casas will be taking students to Barcelona.

An earlier version of this story erroneously said the Coggins scholarship would pay for short-term study-abroad trips.
