A Hood College golf player broke a Hood record at the Cardinal Spring Classic on March 25 and 26.
Graduate assistant and Hood alumnus Sam Driscoll set the new individual record for a 36-hole by shooting 148 in two days.
“The first day, I felt pretty solid about it and I tried really hard, grinded all day,” Driscoll said. “I didn’t have my best stuff out there, but I realized that and I worked on a few things in my basement.”
The conditions at Blackrock Golf Course in Hagerstown weren’t the best on the first day and it delayed the event for two hours before they could finally tee off. “It was lift clean and played everywhere so we were able to clean off our ball and resume play after every shot,” Driscoll said.
“We were able to kind of take advantage of that just because of the softer conditions we could be really aggressive going straight toward the hole,” Driscoll said.
Driscoll shot 75 on the first day of the classic and followed it up with a 73 the next day. With a plus 4 par he tied two others for 12th place.
“It’s tough sometimes to back yourself up with an even better score, but I was able to do that with even tougher conditions,” Driscoll said.
Driscoll credits his time as a baseball player when he was young for improving his hand-eye coordination and says he picked up golf easily. He says he became serious about the game a year or two after he started playing.
That passion carried through high school where he was a four-year starter at Walkersville High School in Frederick.
Driscoll said he models his game after pro golfer Phil Mickelson who is known as a field player. Driscoll said he isn’t worried about his mechanics so much as trusting his feel around the greens.
