Both men’s and women’s golf seasons have begun with each hoping to improve on solid fall performances.
The women are coming off a great fall season where they placed sixth or better in 10 tournaments. The team finished first in the Hood Fall Invitational on Oct. 11 on its home course.
Thomas Chatfield, who has served as the women’s head coach since 2019, accepted the same title with the men’s golf program during the summer of 2022.
The women traveled during spring break to Charleston, South Carolina, where they played a couple of rounds before their first competition on March 18 at the Ruckus golf tournament in Williamsburg, Virginia.
At the Ruckus, the women finished with no team score. Sophomore Mary Emma Guldi finished with a two-day score of 183 and tied for 19th place. During Guldi’s first round, her score of 85 tied the program’s third-place record.
Chatfield said he expects the women to continue to improve.
“The women have been working hard with Coach Powers and Coach Tyree in the weight room. Hopefully, the work they have been putting in with them translates on the golf course,” Chatfield said.
The men’s team also ended the fall well. Three golfers placed in the top seven helping the team win first at the Lebanon Valley Fall Invitational, the team’s last tournament of the fall.
The men’s focus during the offseason was to improve the areas that cost them strokes during the fall, Chatfield said.
“We won one tournament and were four strokes away from winning two others. Those four strokes mean each golfer only needs to improve by one stroke for us to win. With the margin being so small every shot counts,” Chatfield said.
This spring, Chatfield’s goal is for both teams to be better than they were in the previous season. The men placed fifth in the conference last year which was the best placement for the team since the 2015-16 season when it placed third. The women had a record year last year and finished fifth in the MAC Championships.
