The Hood College tennis teams are looking for a turnaround as they enter the spring season.

The men’s team last year went 10-53 in singles matches and 4-26 in doubles matches and 5-45 in conference play. The women’s team last year went 29-54 in singles matches and 15-27 in doubles and 12-48 in conference play.

Both teams are coached by Emily Maerz who graduated from Hood with a degree in political science in 2013. As a player, Maerz ranks third all-time in Blazer history with 45 singles wins, 43 double victories, and 88 total wins from 2009-13.  Her 36 career wins at No.1 is a school record.

“It’s going to be a step-by-step process and the first thing we have to do is establish some stability and depth on both the men’s and women’s side,” Maerz said.

The women’s team currently has seven players and the men only have three. The men’s team is still looking for players this season.

“My next goal is to start being competitive and start winning individual matches for both teams, so Hood isn’t a pushover anymore,” Maerz said.

Maerz wants the men’s team to compete and have individual success this year. The team’s season has been postponed due to a lack of players, but the Blazers will be jam-packed in April to begin their 2023 season.

“It’s just going to be hard for us to put together a team when we don’t have the depth,” Maerz said.

The women’s team is however in far better shape with greater depth. “It’s going to start with them, and they will help Hood College not be seen as an easy win,” Maerz said.

“Everyone’s been great and has great attitudes and are really excited for the future of the program,” Maerz said.
