Review: H-Mart’s new eatery “Oh K-Dog”

Korean corn dogs, popular on social media, are now available at the H-Mart on West Patrick Street in Frederick.

Oh K-Dog, an eatery inside the store, offers 12 varieties of corn dog, which can be customized. If you are not interested in the meat corn dog options, you can swap it for rice cake, squid or mozzarella as a filling. The restaurant has three types of condiments which are mustard, gochujang sauce and sweet chili sauce.

I tried the cheddar corn dog and half mozzarella half hot dog corn dog, both $4.79. The cheddar corn dog was mediocre and dry. The half-mozzarella, half-hot dog was the star of the show, being a perfect mix of cheesy and crisp, and not too heavy on the stomach.

If you’d prefer to skip the corn dogs, the eatery offers sandwiches, tteok-bokki (spicy rice cakes) and slushy drinks.

You can choose from five egg sandwiches with various toppings and one beef teriyaki sandwich. You can order a side of fried cheese balls for $3 extra.

While the sandwiches looked appetizing, I would enjoy seeing more variation in the sandwiches they offer. If someone had an egg aversion, they would only be able to choose the beef teriyaki sandwich.

Service was quick. It is not like a typical restaurant where you are served food at your table. Instead, you walk up to the register in the convenience store to order. When you get your receipt, you are also given a number. When your order is ready, your number is called and you can receive the food from the counter. 

While you’re waiting, you can watch a large TV showing a compilation of different mukbangers (people who record themselves trying different foods while interacting with their audience) trying the corn dogs and rating them.

The environment of the restaurant varies by time of day. If you go to H-mart in the evening, the seating might be limited. When I visited Oh K-Dog, it was loud, crowded and a little overwhelming. If you are easily distracted, I would suggest taking the corn dogs to go.
