Hood College’s track and field team concluded its indoor season with a stellar performance at the Middle Atlantic Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships Feb. 24 and 25.

“I think we had a great indoor season,” head coach Michael Petro stated. “All in all, I think we broke 14 school records; finished with our best conference finish, both in terms of place and points that we ever had. You know, from top to bottom, there’s not much to complain about.”

Championship weekend was nothing short of lively, with a big crowd showing up to cheer on their respective teams. Throughout the day, Hood’s track team was led in spirit by Petro and assistant coaches Martin Owusu-Antwi, Kevin Jones and Josie Niovich.

Petro described MAC championships as an awesome period. The team broke three school records during the championships.

Hood College had three sprinters place top eight in the men’s 60-meter dash. Sophomore Jamel Mins placed second with a time of 7.06 seconds, senior Evan Ellington placed third with a time of 7.09 seconds, and freshman Korell Asamoah placed eighth with a time of 7.30 seconds.

Hood’s 4×400 relay team placed third, with a team composed of Owen Ellington, Mins, Evan Ellington and Chris Sappe. The 4×200 relay team also placed third, with Tofunmi Okuseinde, Asamoah, Evan Ellington, and Mins making up that team.

Mins also competed in the men’s 200-meter dash, with a time of 22.46 seconds to win yet another third-place prize for Hood. Sappe placed second overall in the men’s 800-meter dash, with a time of 1:57:11. Dustin Miller finished eighth in weight throws with a mark of 14.39 meters to close out the weekend.

“Basically, indoor was very, very productive,” Owusu-Antwi stated. “We had almost everybody PR’ing or running close to their PR, which is a huge improvement from last year. Just last year we scored six points (as a team) and this year we scored 44.”

The team traveled to the regional championships on March 3, where the level of competition was even better.

The track team begins its outdoor season on March 24, at the Blue and Gold classic.
