Hood College has chosen former Maryland state senator Ron Young as the 2023 commencement speaker.
Laurie Ward, the executive director of marketing and communications at Hood College, said she believed Young was a fitting choice for speaker because of all he has done for the Frederick community.
“We wouldn’t have Downtown Frederick the way it is without him,” Ward said.
Among the many things Young accomplished while in office, the Carroll Creek flood control project was one of the most notable. The system created a man-made creek that flows through the city’s center and became a focus for redevelopment.
Young retired from the state senate in late 2022.
Young began his career in local politics in the late 1960s and was elected to the Frederick Board of Aldermen in 1969. In 1974, Young took office as the mayor of Frederick, a position he held for 16 years before being elected to the state senate.
