Ava Swartz was awarded Mid-Atlantic Conference player of the week after scoring two goals in Hood’s road win against Eastern University on Oct. 8.
“Winning MAC player of the week obviously was a great feeling and motivated me to want to continue to do well,” Swartz said. “Every time something may get rough, or I may have a bad game I will probably think about how amazing it felt to earn that title of being player of the week and use that to push myself to get better.”
Schwartz’ two goals against Eastern were her first of the season. She also has one assist on the season. She said she was surprised to receive the award.
“I actually didn’t see that I got the award, my boyfriend told me, but at first I didn’t believe him and then I saw for myself and I was almost in shock because I never thought I would’ve gotten that,” Swartz added. “My parents were thrilled, they were happy that my hard work the previous week had paid off.”
In her freshman season, Schwartz scored four goals and recorded one assist, playing in 12 games and starting in five.
Coming from a family of athletes, Swartz has been playing soccer since the age of 5, as soccer was the sport that she said always made her happy. She was recruited to play for Baltimore Armor, an elite club soccer program.
Schwartz said that she is thankful for her coaches and teammates for supporting her as a player.
“My teammates have helped me on and off the field tremendously, every day at practice they push me to be the best player I can physically be,” Swartz said. “My coach also expects the best and pushes us to become even better players than we already are.”
Schwartz said she chose Hood because after touring other schools, Hood just felt right.
“I think even if I were to not play soccer anymore, I would still love hood due to the friendliness of the community,” Swartz added.
Swartz and the Blazers finished their season on Oct. 29 and look to improve their record for next year.
