The largest corn maze in Maryland is open to all patrons

Kids and adults looking for fun autumn activities around Frederick this October can find plenty to do at Magnolia Meadow Farms.

The farm located at 13001 Creagerstown Road in Thurmont sits only 25 minutes from Hood College. It features the largest corn maze in the state of Maryland, with over five miles of trails.

Every year, a new design is cut into the corn so that the trails never get stale. This year, the maze was designed after the Magnolia Meadow Farms’ logo, as the farm was recently rebranded and given a fresh look. The corners of the maze were also cut into different shapes, including a cow’s head, a flower, and a patch of clouds.

The maze was created with 12 checkpoints scattered throughout it. If participants find all 12, they can turn in their ticket for a chance to win free admission the next year.

The cornstalks are about 8 feet tall. In previous years, the corn had been shorter and thinner, so the maze was much more challenging this time.

The maze begins with four or five possible trails, and because of the size of the field, visitors can spread out and don’t run into people too often. Thus, participants are largely on their own to find each checkpoint.

Since the trails are cut out and cleared thoroughly, the paths tend to become muddy, so boots or worn sneakers are the best footwear for a trip to the farm.

Although the corn maze is the crown jewel of the farm, there are also plenty of other activities. For children, the farm offers pedal cart racing, slides, a train ride on the “Moo Choo Train”, apple cannons, and mini ziplines.

Visitors can also interact with the animals. The farm is home to over 25 goats, ducks, cows, a handful of sheep, one giant bunny (and some smaller ones), and two horses. For $3, guests can purchase a large cup of feed for the animals.

The farm also has a sunflower field and a pumpkin patch, as well as a farmer’s market that sells pastries, flower bouquets, pumpkins, homemade jams, and t-shirts. At Magnolia Meadow, you can also rent your own firepit and make s’mores while listening to live music outside.

The farm partnered with a local brewery and winery to serve alcoholic beverages, but they also serve other drinks such as fresh-squeezed lemonade, hot apple cider, cold brew coffee, and even a signature milkshake. In addition, the food menu is extensive and features kettle corn made right at the farm, crab dip and homemade chips, apple cider doughnuts, burgers, pulled brisket nachos, and a grilled chicken, bacon, and chive sandwich.

In the fall, Magnolia Meadow Farms is open on weekends. The farm hours are 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Fridays, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturdays, and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sundays.

Admission is $15, though children ages 2 and under are admitted for free.
