The Office of Study Abroad at Hood College has many events scheduled throughout the next few months.
The study abroad fair that took place on Sept. 14 featured multiple tables with information on different trips and programs available to students.
Several faculty-led study abroad trips are happening this spring, including trips planned to Canada, Spain, Italy, Belize and Germany.
One table at the study abroad fair featured Deena Faraby who works with the Amideast Abroad Program that offers trips to countries such as Tunisia, Jordan and Dubai.
Scott Pincikowski, the chairman for the Department of Global Languages and Cultures, said that the fair was intended to create awareness and see potential interest in the study abroad program.
Other study abroad events will be held this fall, including the Davis Peace Project presentation.
The Davis Peace Project is a grant competition where students can work to develop a project to promote peace in different areas of the world. Previous projects have focused on Thailand, Lebanon and Sudan. The Davis Peace Project presentation will be on Oct. 5 from 12:45 p.m. to 2 p.m. at the Dreiling Seminar Room in Coblentz Hall.
A second study abroad information session will be on Oct. 6 at the Career Center from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. Any student is welcome to attend.
Pincikowski said that the session will introduce students to different programs and the benefits of studying abroad. He added that he wants to help students realize and accomplish what they want out of the study abroad experience.
There will also be a grant workshop for the Davis Peace Prize, Fullbright and Volpe scholars. The Fullbright U.S. Student Program is for students who wish to conduct research or teach English across the world. The Volpe Scholars Program is for students involved in unique learning experiences such as internships or study abroad trips. This event will take place on Oct. 19 from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. at the Career Center.
There are several steps to join a study abroad program. First, students should contact Pincikowski at pincikowski@hood.edu or 301-696-3475. Next, students need to meet with their advisors and then visit the Financial Aid Office. Finally, students should attend an orientation session at the Career Center and finalize their paperwork.
Pincikowski, who studied abroad as a student, said it is a “transformative experience” and attainable for students. While there may be different obstacles for students who wish to join one of these programs, the Office of Study Abroad is willing to work with students to overcome these obstacles, he said.
