Women’s ice hockey will be added as a varsity sport at Hood College in the winter of 2024-2025.
“I am very excited to bring a new sport to the winter sports, along with adding numbers to the women’s athletics for Title IX,” Athletic Director Susan Kolb said.
With the addition of men’s volleyball, the school had to add another women’s sport to comply with Title IX regulations, Kolb said.
Ice hockey will become the 13th women’s sport offered at the college.
The team will play at Skate Frederick, a local ice-skating and hockey facility approximately five minutes from Hood’s campus.
Students said they are looking forward to the new sport.
“I think the addition of women’s ice hockey is great for women’s sports and the community, along with opening up new doors here at Hood College,” first-year student Austin Rhue said.
“It is just exciting in general as hockey is a fun sport to watch and not every college has the opportunity to say they have an ice hockey team, as well as it reminds me of home as we have a semi-pro ice hockey team,” said first-year student Quade Gannon.
The addition of the sport creates more opportunities for women athletes just as the addition of men’s volleyball opened up more options for men’s athletics.
Six other schools in the Mid-Atlantic Conference (MAC) have women’s ice hockey teams, including Stevenson University, Alvernia University, Arcadia University, Lebanon Valley College, Wilkes University and King’s College.
“Hockey is sponsored in the MAC, so Hood would not have to find a different conference to compete in,” Kolb said.
