This spring, the Hood College baseball team will introduce its first female player to the line-up.
The player, first-year student Remi Schaber,18, comes to Hood from Memphis, Tennessee.
While on the way to visit extended family in New York, Schaber and her family stopped at the I-95 Baseball Showcase in New Jersey. At the showcase, she met Hood baseball coach, Michael Impellittiere, who invited Schaber to Hood’s baseball exposure camp.
Schaber grew up playing baseball and was coached by her father. “He taught me literally everything about baseball,” Schaber said. “Playing for my dad I feel like it was so easy for him to push me in the right direction… Those are some of my best memories.”
This past summer, Schaber tried out for and was named in the 2022 U.S. Women’s National Team. Schaber was one of 20 women named to the team this summer.
While competing for the U.S., Schaber and her fellow teammates clinched the series against Team Canada by winning three of five games.
Now Schaber believes that her previous teams and environments have prepared her to play for Hood.
“The coaches there are very good… They’re very focused and know what they want and how they want the team to practice, play and behave. It’s a very fun experience but at the same time it’s very baseball oriented and its very professional,” Schaber said.
The jump from high school to college athletics can be jarring but Schaber isn’t letting the fact that she will be competing against potential 21- and 22-year olds this spring bog her down, particularly in a sport dominated by men.
