A new security program involves student workers

The Department of Campus Safety announced a new program this year in which students will undertake security duties to promote safety on campus.

This program, called the Student Auxiliary Patrol Program, will allow students to become more involved on campus and form new connections, Chief of Campus Safety Thurmond Maynard said.

Students accepted into the program will have various duties such as providing walking escorts, patrolling campus buildings and parking lots, checking outdoor emergency blue phones, and reporting any suspicious behavior or activity to campus safety.

“I think that all students— all community members just in general— are additional sets of eyes and ears,” Maynard said.

He added that this program will be “proactive rather than reactive” and help report any possible threats to campus safety.

The Student Auxiliary Patrol at Hood was inspired by a similar program that Vice President of Marketing and Communications Laurie Ward was involved in at a previous institution. Maynard said he thought that the program would be a good way to help supplement the Campus Safety Department.

If students are interested in being part of the Student Auxiliary Patrol Program, they should send Maynard two references from faculty or staff members. Students must be upperclassmen and eligible for the Federal Work-Study Program, which will be funding the program.
