Alumni Profile: Matthias Teufel

A Hood College alum is working on the front lines to integrate a cooperative video screen network start-up with T-Mobile.

Matthias Teufel, class of 2018, graduated Hood College as a business administration and global studies double major with a concentration in finance. He graduated with a full-time job working at Octopus Interactive.

Octopus Interactive allows brands to showcase advertisements on screens in Uber and Lyft cars which provides a new way to access customers, a T-Mobile press release said.

Teufel interned at Octopus Interactive his senior year of college, knowing he would stay with the company for more than a year. He said he wanted to intern somewhere he would later want to join in a more full-time capacity.

“I really enjoy starting something from the ground up,” Teufel said. “I love working with people who are motivated with the same goal.”

The sale of Octopus Interactive to T-Mobile was announced in January 2022. Teufel is now working at T-Mobile  to ensure the integration  of the two companies goes well.

Hood alumni Cherian Thomas ‘12 and Joe Hutchins ’18 were also part of Octopus Interactive. Hutchins left the project a few years ago, but Thomas is now working at T-Mobile along with Teufel.

Teufel said his most recent accomplishment career-wise was the process of building Octopus Interactive.

While his college first-year self would be surprised at how far he has come, his current self could not be prouder. “I have a pretty entrepreneurial background for myself, I want to start my own company at some point,” Teufel said.

Teufel advises current Hood College students to take the first three years of college to figure out what they want to do and where they want to go.

He recommends taking the last year to set up the area you are focusing in and to use summers to intern at companies that may interest you.

“Enjoy the time, but also take it seriously,” Teufel said. “Get as much practical experience in the field you would like to be in or in fields you think you would like.”
