Blazers fall in first round of NCAA tournament

Evan Wang dribbles up the court in the first round of the NCAA tournament.

After a historical, record-breaking season, Hood’s men’s basketball was defeated by Oswego State in the first round of the NCAA Tournament at Swarthmore College on Friday, March 4.

This loss ends the Blazers’ 2021-22 season with a 20-7 record. The Wang twins led the team with Mason scoring 23 points and Evan following up with 21. Bryce Bulter added in another 15.

Hood scored more points against Oswego’s nationally ranked defense than any other school.

With eight minutes left in the first half, Evan’s free throws put the Blazers up 27-19. Oswego came back from that and hit a 15-point run with the Blazers making five turnovers and shooting 0 for 6 to end the half with Oswego up 34-27.

Oswego came out strong in the second half and continued to increase their lead on Hood. With 13:48 left in the half, the score was 50-40. Hood’s resilience kept them chipping at the lead throughout the half, but the Blazers couldn’t catch up fast enough. The final score was 83-72.

Men’s basketball was the first Hood College athletic team to get a bid for the NCAA tournament and to win the MAC. Four seniors will be graduating this spring, leaving a lot of experienced guys ready to take over next year.

With an incredible season behind them, men’s basketball has made a name for themselves within Hood’s community and the MAC conference.
