Pre-health club offers a support system to students

By Olivia Todd

Hood students who are interested in the health field can find support in the Pre-Health Club.

The club was started in February 2020 by Linda Redd, current club president. Redd is a junior majoring in biology with a minor in chemistry. She plans to work in the dental field after school, specializing in working with patients who have autism.

Some members of the club are applying to medical school and doctorate programs, whereas others just need guidance on which classes to choose. Members of the club help sustain a supportive environment where everyone can hear from a variety of perspectives, Redd said.

“We give each other tips and advice going along the process,” she said.

Redd is focusing on training the underclassmen club members in leadership skills so they will be able to take over the club after she graduates.

“I have a goal that the club will continue on after we all graduate,” Redd said.

The club will be hosting various Hood alumni for Q&As throughout the month of March. Some of the speakers include a vet student, a dental student, and a medical student. At the end of February, they will watch a documentary on the Tuskegee experiment in honor of Black History Month.

Volunteering opportunities are available throughout the school year. In the past, members have volunteered at vaccination and pharmaceutical clinics.

Common activities during meetings are a variety of discussions and trivia games for members to keep updated on the health field.

Students who are interested in participating in the club can contact Redd at ler4@hood.edu or follow @hoodprehealth on Instagram.
