The Black Student Union (BSU) kicked off Black History Month with its first event, Blue’z and Food, on Feb. 1.
A large crowd attended the event, which ran from 7:30 p.m. to 11 p.m. in the Whitaker Commons. Additional seating had to be brought in to accommodate the crowd as everyone enjoyed the music, food and time with friends. “I felt like I was going to a cookout on campus,” first-year student Kay Francis said.
The food was set-up buffet style and the line wrapped around the room. President of BSU Domota Byrd said, “I hope people respond good, probably mad we ran out of food.”
The music was initially picked by club members, but YouTube was pulled up on the projector and anyone could pick the next song. “Whatever they want to listen to, we play,” Byrd said.
Some of the music played was from the early 2000’s and 2010’s, including songs by artists like Rihanna and Beyonce.
“I hope they want to see the event again and again,” Byrd said.
Byrd explained that the idea behind the event was to incorporate the idea of cook-outs as bonding events, an idea that traces back to the 90’s in the Black community.
“It’s a good way to celebrate Black history and Black students and other students can come together to celebrate our cause,” said Blessing Johnson, a sophomore member of BSU.
Other students agreed that the event was fun and that they hope to see it yearly. “Monthly if possible,” Francis jokingly said.
“Come out to the BSU events,” Byrd said. “It’s not just for the African American community, it’s for everybody.”
