Netflix original “He’s All That” was added to the platform on Aug. 27 as a remake of the 1999 teen rom-com “She’s All That” and it is subpar at best.
The highly anticipated gender-swapped film where a popular high-school social media star bets she can turn a “loser” into homecoming king soared to No. 1 soon after its release. However, the movie had negative reviews all over social media in less than 24 hours.
Comparing the film to the popularity of the original, it was hard to sit through the 90 minutes and not think that the creators could have done a better job at the internal logic of the movie. The film seemed more focused on product placement and the revenue that would come in from the release more than anything else.
Aside from the advertising, the casting also seemed very rushed and not well thought out. Other than the supporting role of the lead from the original film, Rachel Leigh Cooke, and cameo from Matthew Lillard, the cast seemed like a concoction of today’s most popular influencers on social media.
The film featured Tik Tok star Addison Rae as the lead and even had a cameo from Kourtney Kardashian. Not saying that social media stars shouldn’t dive into different career paths if they had the opportunity to do so, but with a remake of a popular film, Netflix should have known better than to cast someone who has never been on the big screen before.
This is not to say that the entire cast didn’t do their job. The male lead, Tanner Buchanan, did a good job at portraying the said “loser.” His experience as a child star really showed and he was able to fit the role perfectly.
All in all, I would rate the movie 5/10, mostly because I was happy to see that some original cast members were included in the film. I would probably recommend this movie to someone who is really bored and has watched every other rom-com on Netflix.
