Since the pandemic started, it has been more popular than ever to either listen to or start one’s own podcast. Following this trend, Hood College is now offering a course to teach its students how to produce their own podcasts.
“Podcasting is a new and growing form of communication,” said professor Tim Jacobsen, who teaches the course. “If we want our students to be successful, we must introduce them to as many forms of communication as possible.”
Students who take this course will be recording their podcasts mainly outside of class. There are rooms being designated as audio recording rooms once the renovations for the third floor of Rosenstock are complete.
On the first day of class, students came up with a general concept for their podcasts and thought about things like a title, art, and possible guests to have on their podcasts.
“I’ve always been interested in podcasting, and when Hood offered it as a class it gave me all the reason to sign up,” senior Kyle Richardson said. “I know that taking it will give me more insight on audio engineering.”
Richardson recommended that this course shouldn’t just be taken as a filler course, since it will mostly benefit students who already have a background with Adobe editing software learned from previous CMA courses.
The students in the class are allowed to sign out professional-grade microphones to use for their recordings, as well as mic interview kits if they want to bring someone on as a guest.
Jacobsen said that he decided this course would be a good idea because of all the positive feedback he received from students when he asked them if they’d be interested in the course. A maximum of 12 students are allowed in the course, and as long as students are interested in taking the course, it will be offered every semester from now on, he said.
