Beans and Bagels, located on East Patrick Street in Downtown Frederick, opened June 20, 2008. Because of COVID-19 restrictions, the restaurant is seating customers outside.

Outside, the atmosphere is pleasant because it is open and airy, and although the outdoor seating is right next to the road, it isn’t overly noisy. There are about a half a dozen metal tables outside, with about fifteen chairs that allow for two to four people to sit at one table.

Although a bit uncomfortable, the tables and chairs are sturdy and weather tolerant.

The service was extremely fast while I was there. My food was out of the kitchen and brought to me within a few minutes. All of the workers were very kind and attentive, and they seemed to want to make sure I was satisfied.

The experience and food were definitely worth the money. I spent about $13 on my entire meal, not including tax or tip, which was a bagel breakfast sandwich, a medium-sized specialty coffee and a muffin.

I felt that the food surpassed the minimal expense because the coffee was freshly made and hot, as was the sausage, egg and cheese on an egg bagel sandwich. Also, the cappuccino crunch muffin was moist and tasted homemade.

Owner, Rich Jackson told me all of the restaurant’s muffins and cakes are homemade by the co-owner, Lisa Jackson.

Jackson said  the restaurant gets its bagels from a partner who makes them five days a week. Then, the Jacksons boil and bake the bagels two days a week, “so they’re always fresh,” Jackson said.

Jackson said the coffee is made from beans from various countries, including Peru, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Ethiopia, Columbia, Somalia and Brazil.

A unique aspect of Beans and Bagels is that dishes and drinks are named after employees and regular patrons, Jackson said.

A few examples include: A breakfast platter called the Vinnie Special, named after a little boy, now grown, who would only order a plate of sausage, eggs and cheese; the Jackson, a roast beef sandwich that Rich Jackson made when he worked at Roy Rogers; and The Logan, which is another roast beef sandwich an employee named Greg Logan created.

Overall, I had a highly enjoyable experience at Beans and Bagels, which is a place that is much more than it seems. I will definitely be going back, either to sit outside again or grab a meal to go.
