Weekend Round-Up: First weekend of spring sports

Baseball: The Hood baseball team went 1-3 on March 6 and March 7 against the Golden Wolves of Alvernia University. In Hood’s win, Andrew Wenner collected two runs batted in (RBI’s) and scored one run. Wenner also made a diving catch in center field to stop a base hit from Alvernia. The Blazers went on to win that game 4-2.

Softball: The Hood softball team lost their first three games this weekend against Stevenson University but bounced back to win the fourth by a score of 9-2. In Hood’s win, Cailyn Barthlow and Belle Bortner both had two RBI’s. Lone senior, Caitlin Gosline had three at bats and three base hits. She ended the game with one run and one RBI. Anna Schipske scored two runs, while Angela Acampora, Brandi Davidson, Jordan Long and Colleen Blasko contributed to the win as well, each with one run.

Women’s lacrosse: The Hood women’s lacrosse team defeated the Arcadia University Knights to win their home opener in double overtime with a score of 10-9. Laura Skorobatsch not only had the first two goals of the competition, but also sealed Hood’s win with an overtime goal. Jess Lyons and Liz Connelly each had three goals. Lyons also had an assist. Sophia Vilaca had seven saves in the goalkeeper position to help protect Hood’s win.

Men’s lacrosse: The Hood men’s lacrosse team lost their season opener to Arcadia University 13-6. Bentley LeBarron netted three goals in the first quarter, while Gavin Combe, Colby Gallagher and Aden Sievert each scored one. Logan Rhoads caused four Arcadia turnovers. Despite a valiant effort, Hood couldn’t overcome Arcadia’s 13 goals.

Men’s swimming: The Hood men’s swimming team defeated Stevenson University 118-44. Hazen Stowell and Patrick Krol picked up two wins to boost Hood’s score, while Brooks Anderson, Andrew Bezmen and Russell Odor all won their races as well.

Women’s swimming: The Hood women’s swimming team was defeated by Stevenson University 105-37 in the season opener. Grace Winpigler had the lone event win for the Blazers in 50-yard freestyle. Winpigler also placed second in the 100-yard breaststroke. Kaila Tom and Hailey Sofranko each had one second place finish as well. Tom finished the 200 free with a time of 2:54.94 and Sofranko finished the 200 IM with a time of 3:06.89.
