Some people go to college looking forward to getting some space from their parents, but not these students.

Senior Lily Bean and junior Mackenzie Farran both have parents working on campus. Bean’s mother is an assistant professor of law and criminal justice and Farran’s father works for campus safety.

Farran said “My dad working at Hood College is a gift to me.” Farran’s dad has a police background and retired from his previous job working for the Secret Service in 2019, then came to work for Hood in 2020.

Farran transferred to Hood from Frederick Community College. During her time at FCC, she spent a lot of time at Hood watching games and meeting current students, which she said strengthened her decision to come to Hood.

Farran said free tuition and having someone just a phone call away are some of the pros of having a parent on campus.

Coming to Hood “wasn’t expected of me, but I really wanted to prolong the legacy and decided that Hood was a perfect fit,” Bean said.

Bean said, “I’ve connected with a lot of her students that I’d never interact with otherwise.”

There are also some cons to having your parent at school with you. Bean said, “Differentiating between her relationship with her students and my relationship with her students can be a little difficult.”

Bean said, “My freshman year, we had a legacy brunch and that was one of the best times my mom and I had together on campus.”

“Being at Hood the last two years as a student athlete and now my father being a part of the Hood community, we have become a Hood College family,” Farran said

  1. Great article about legacy stories! Just FYI, Professor Bean is a Hood alumna from the Class of 1987.
