Hood College announced the spring semester calendar and the return of the January term in an email last week.
The spring semester will begin on Feb. 1, 2021, and end on May 14 with final exams ending on May 21. There will be no spring break. Instead there will be a series of days off, starting with Feb. 18, March 9, April 2 (Good Friday) and April 21.
The J-term will start Jan. 4, 2021, and last until Jan. 22.
“The J-term classes will be held fully online,” Provost Debbie Ricker said. “And the classes will be billed at $500 per credit hour.”
Students will be able to view the offered courses for both spring and the J-term on Monday, Oct. 19 via Self Service.
Students have had mixed reviews on the late start of the spring semester.
“I personally don’t like how long the break is because I think that it is too much time away from school and it stretches out our semester into the end of May,” senior Garrett Gravanda said.
Hood athletes have also expressed concern that it would have a negative effect on the start of the spring season.
“I like how the semester is starting later but it would be tricky with baseball since our preseason normally starts in January,” junior Danny Brennan said. “But I also like that it gives us two months to unwind from stress of no days off and school and it also gives us more time to spend with family.”
