Former Hood College student and lacrosse player Walter DeBruin died on Sept. 6 from an acute asthma attack.

DeBruin last attended Hood in spring 2020, according to an email sent by President Andrea Chapdelaine.

Students are mourning the loss of DeBruin as he had a lot of influence on the Hood Community and the men’s lacrosse team.

“It’s hard on our class. He was one of us and even though he didn’t come back we were all still close with him,” sophomore Kevin Clohosey said. “It definitely had a big impact and it sucks to see someone so young go that early.”

Hood alumnus Scott Kiewe said, “He was an awesome guy. He lit up a room and was always positive. He was a great teammate and a great friend. He will truly be missed.”

Men’s lacrosse coach Brad Barber spoke about DeBruin and his passion for lacrosse.

“He was a very talented player who had a bright future in the sport,” Barber said. “Walter will be missed by many.”

“Please keep Walter’s family, his parents David DeBruin and Paula Costello, his siblings Will, Jack and Elizabeth, as well as his friends, former teammates and coaches, in your thoughts,” Chapdelaine said.
